Covid-19 Testing FAQs

How can I be tested for COVID-19?

COVID-19 testing at our laboratory is available through two channels. First, you can obtain an order from your healthcare provider who can collect the sample and send it to our laboratory for testing. Alternatively, you can schedule an appointment [please link to scheduling here] to have your specimen collected at our laboratory’s drive up testing center.

How long does it take to get results?

Because of our high throughput test our laboratory can process hundreds of specimens in a day. This allows us to offer rapid turnaround with results in less than 24 hours and even sooner in most cases.

How is the specimen collected?

Our test is approved for nasal, nasopharyngeal (back of throat through the nose) and oropharyngeal (back of throat through the mouth) samples. We believe that the nasopharyngeal sample still produces the most accurate results, so this is the method we use at our collection center.

How accurate is your test?

This is a difficult question to answer with certainty because it depends on a range of factors including the timing of the sample (i.e. you may have been tested before you developed significant numbers of virus in your respiratory tract) and proper specimen collection. Our test has been shown to be highly sensitive with the ability to detect a very low number of virus copies when properly collected.

What does a positive test mean?

If you have a positive test result, it is very likely that you have COVID-19. Therefore, it is also likely that you may be placed in isolation to avoid spreading the virus to others.

What does a negative test mean?

A negative test result means that the virus that causes COVID-19 was not found in your sample. For COVID-19, a negative test result for a sample collected while a person has symptoms usually means that COVID-19 did not cause your recent illness.

However, it is possible for this test to give a negative result that is incorrect (false negative) in some people with COVID-19. This means that you could possibly still have COVID-19 even though the test is negative. If this is the case, your healthcare provider will consider the test result together with all other aspects of your medical history (such as symptoms, possible exposures, and geographical location of places you have recently traveled) in deciding how to care for you.

It is important that you work with your healthcare provider to help you understand the next steps you should take.
