Breast Pathology
Our laboratory professionals understand the anxiety and concern that is associated with the discovery of a breast mass. Because of this we provide a full range of diagnostic modalities in order to rapidly arrive at a diagnosis. Our breast pathology services include:
- Evaluation of all types of breast biopsies (stereotactic, excisional, incisional, etc.)
- In house hormone receptor testing (ER, PR) on all breast cancer cases
- In house HER2 testing on all breast cancer cases
- Full synoptic reporting for resection specimens
- Immunohistochemical staining
- Expert breast consultation for difficult cases

Cryptopathology
Cytopathology is a subspecialty of pathology dedicated to the study of individual cells. Our professional cytology team led by Dr. Meiklejohn McKenzie, a board certified cytopathologist provides expert diagnosis of all cytology specimens including:
- Bile Duct Brushings
- Body Fluids
- Bronchial Washings
- Bronchial Brushings
- Cerebrospinal Fluids
- Pap smears (Please also see the Women’s Health section for more information)
Dr. McKenzie also has a special interest in fine needle aspiration cytology. Our cytology team is available for on site slide preparation as well as rapid on site evaluation (ROSE) of fine needle aspiration specimens. Our laboratory processes and examines fine needle aspiration specimens from all body sites including: Adrenal, Breast, Liver, Lung, Lymph Node, Pancreas, Salivary Gland, Stomach, Soft Tissue, and Thyroid.
Finally, our practice boasts two of Tennessee’s only freestanding fine needle aspiration clinics. Dr. McKenzie performs biopsies of thyroid nodules, lymph nodes, salivary gland masses, and soft tissue masses under ultrasound guidance at both our Cookeville and Murfreesboro locations. Molecular Diagnostics
Our laboratory is a leader in the growing field of molecular diagnostics. We are proud to offer our clients a variety of molecular assays that enable our clients to treat their patients quickly and accurately. Our current molecular test menu includes:

In 2017, our laboratory is also proud to partner with BioFire Diagnostics to offer the FilmArray real time PCR assay. This platform boasts two distinct PCR panels that provide rapid identification of causative microorganisms:
